Stunning and rare sake bottle (tokkuri) from the Sino-Japan War of 1894-5. Very few military items can be found from this period, and military-themed bottles are among the rarest. The bottle has four main scenes. On one side a mounted soldier with drawn sword battles two Chinese soldiers, who have staffs. Above is a cannon firing. On the other side (see pics to the left) a warship fires a cannon and some soldiers are charging.

More Tokkuri
Below are two examples of early military-themed tokkuri. The military boom started after the
victory over Russia in 1905, but a few items were also made after the first Sino-Japan war of
1894-5.
The first example is from that earlier war. Note that the pattern is in blue underglaze. The
second bottle has had a patterned sticker of some sort applied before firing. The earlier one,
though, also shows signs of having been made with a stamped pattern of some sort.
Both are very interesting and quite rare.
