Taiwan cups and other items
Various ways of
writing 'Taiwan'
Cups and bottles from units that served in Taiwan are highly sought after by certain
collectors, especially--but not limited to--those who are from Taiwan. I am not sure of
the number of units in Taiwan, but it was the first Japanese colony (1895) and there
seems to have been troops there for over around 50 years. However, items marked
TAIWAN are scarce, perhaps because only a couple of regiments were stationed
there.

There is no special design or symbol or pattern often seen on Taiwan cups.

Here are a few examples.
Taiwan regiment lacquered wood cup with the number 2 and
a cherry blossom. Most likely the 2 stands for '2nd Regiment.'
Inscribed 'Taiwan Defense Commemorative, Igarashi'.
Taiwan Defense cup with map of Taiwan. Inscribed
'Taiwan [on the island] Defense Commemorative'. On
the reverse: 'Infantry 9th Regiment, Yamamoto.'
Scarce Taiwan Machine Gun Unit cup. Nice detailed gun.

Inscribed 'Taiwan Infantry, 1st Regiment, Machine Gun Unit, Furlough
Commemorative, Watanabe Shunichi'.
'Conquer Taiwan Commemorative, Meiji 29-30 [1896-7], Infantry
80th Regiment, 1st Battalion.'
Here is a very rare Air Corps cup from a unit based in Taiwan. The
city is also named, which makes it even more special.
Inscribed 'Taiwan, Pingtung Air Corps, 8th Regiment, Bando.'
Inscribed 'Taiwan Infantry, 1st Regiment, Discharge
Commemorative, Mitsui'.
Very rare Taiwan Unit cup with a map of Taiwan. One city is
labeled here: Taipei.

Inscribed 'Taiwan Infantry, 2nd Regiment, Kawabe.'
Rare Taiwan Fortress Artillery cup.
'Keelung Heavy Artillery Commemorative, Nagato.'
Keelung is a port in northern Taiwan.
'Taiwan 2nd Infantry, Taiwan Defense Commemorative, Saito.'
'Taiwan 1st Infantry.'
Absolutely superb hand-painted set. Fantastic artwork and wonderful condition. The design shows a
Japanese soldier planting a flag on the island of Taiwan, which is labeled 'Japanese Territory.'

There is an upside-down Chinese soldier that probably is a symbol of the Chinese defeat. Underneath are
stylized clouds.

Around the Japanese soldier, this is inscribed: 'Suppression of Taiwan, Great Victory of the Army.'

Around the rim, this is written: 'Aomori Infantry, 5th Regiment, 9th Company, Superior Private, Kanehira.'

Written on the inside lid of the original box: 'Aomori Infantry, 5th Regiment, 3rd Battalion, 9th Company, 1st
Platoon, Kanehira Kumagoro, Meiji 30 [1900] November 30, Term Fulfillment Discharge, Return Home
Commemorative Sake Cups.'

Such a detailed inscription is quite rare.
'Tainan Infantry, [??].'
