Rare lacquered wood cup from a unit that served in Taiwan, quite scarce. The pattern has a nice gold gilt military star and blossoms. Items from the 1st and 2nd regiments are highly sought-after. Inscribed: 'Taiwan Infantry, 2nd Regiment, Discharge Commemorative.'

Various ways of writing 'Taiwan'

This tokkuri is inscribed 'Taiwan, Tainan
Infantry, 2nd Regiment, 1st Division.' This is
the first item I have seen that names a
specific city in Taiwan.
Inscribed 'Taiwan Mountain Artillery,
Discharge Commemorative, Sakai.'
Inscribed 'Taiwan Heavy Artillery Division,
Discharge Commemorative.'
Cups and bottles from units that served in Taiwan are highly sought after by certain
collectors, especially--but not limited to--those who are from Taiwan. I am not sure of
the number of units in Taiwan, but it was the first Japanese colony (1895) and there
seems to have been troops there for over around 50 years. However, items marked
TAIWAN are scarce, perhaps because only a couple of regiments were stationed
there.
There is no special design or symbol or pattern often seen on Taiwan cups.
Here are a few examples.
Both inscribed 'Taiwan Infantry 2nd Regiment.'
Inscribed 'Taiwan Defense Commemorative, Infantry 5th
Regiment, 9th Battalion.'
Inscribed 'Taiwan Infantry 1st Regiment.'
Inscribed: 'Taiwan, Discharge Commemorative.' Note the beautiful hand-painted scenery, including two small soldiers with artillery.
