Submarine Units
Lacquered wood. Gold gilt anchor and blossom in
the center.

Inscribed on the reverse: 'Showa 5 [1930], 6th
Submarine Group, Preparation Skills Championship.' I
have included a photo of the reverse phrase
'Submarine Group [
sensuitai]' because it is extremely
rare to find a cup inscribed to one of these units. After
many years of dealing in cups, this is the first I have
ever seen.
Inscribed: 'Academy Opening Commemorative, Navy Submarine Academy, Taisho 9
[1920] September 20.' This was the first submarine academy in Japan. It was first
opened in Kure Naval District (Hiroshima) and then moved to Otake City (also
Hiroshima) in 1942. The academy was officially closed on September 15, 1945.
The design has a submarine outline and the water is blown ink (
fukizumi).
Finding any sake cup referring to Navy submarines is very difficult. In all these years,
I have seen only three submarine-related cups.
