6-Week Service Cups
Inscribed '68th Infantry, Commemorative, 6-Week Service'.
Conscription for the IJA was usually for a term of 2 years. After that duty was
fulfilled, soldiers could be called up for a certain period of time, and this time varied
according to the class of soldier.

Although the period of service may have varied, commemorative cups for this kind
of recall almost always have '6-Week Service', so perhaps this was the set phrase,
or perhaps the period of recall was generally set at six weeks.

There is no common theme to the designs for these cups. The kanji can either have
the full phrase or an abbreviation. (Both shown below.) These cups are small in
number, but they don't seem to be valued by collectors unless the designs are
striking.
To the left, the full phrase, read
from top to bottom:
rokushukan
[6 weeks]
geneki hei [active
service soldier]

To the right are two examples of
the abbreviated phrase, reducing
6 kanji to two by using only the
1st and 4th kanji. The two might
be read as
rokugen.
Inscribed 'Meiji 35 [1902], 6-Week Military Service, Commemorative,
Hashimoto'.
