More Navy Items
A beautiful Navy plate with an interesting embossed pattern. At the top is
the Navy Anchor with a superimposed kanji for 'Award'. Below is a
samurai warrior on horseback. To the right are crashing waves, and in the
distance is a painted warship.

In the background is a map of Asia, with Korea being the same color as
Japan (having been annexed in 1910) and Manchukuo shown in outline.
The disputed island of Sakhalin (Karafuto) is shown in two colors, one half
belonging to the Russians.

Inscribed on the reverse: 'Showa 14 [1939], Navy Inspection Merit Award.'
Rare pewter Navy cup from Korea.
Inscribed 'Chinkai [Chinhae],  Service [or Duty, Work]
Commemorative.'  Chinhae is a port in southern Korea. The
Japanese established a naval base there when they were
occupying the country (1910-1945). It is currently a naval base
for the Korean Navy.
Interesting naval cup. The reverse has this inscription: '7th Annual Tsushima
Straits Battle  Commemorative, Held at Kobe Bay, 1st Fleet'.
Although the Tsushima Straits are not specifically named, the name of this
battle is. Since this battle took place in 1905 (May 27 & 28), this cup can be
accurately dated: 1912.

Also inscribed in the bowl 'Participated in the Battle'.
Inscribed on the reverse 'Kawanishi Flying Boat Completion Commemorative'.  The plane in the bowl
seems to be a fairly accurate depiction of the flying boat. I believe this plane was first made for the IJN
in 1936. Please let me know if I am mistaken.
The hand-painted design has a torpedo and cannon. Also a life preserver, Imperial
mums (to the left), a pink cherry blossom in the center, and white cherry blossoms to
the right. Very beautiful--and finding a torpedo on cups is rare.

Inscribed 'Yokosuka Naval Club'. Of course, Yokusuka Naval Base was one of the most
important throughout the history of the Imperial Japanese Navy. I think this cup was
made for officers.
