South Manchuria Railroad
The South Manchuria Railroad was established in 1906 and abolished in 1945. Operated by a semi-private
company but controlled by the Japanese military, it was extremely important for both civilians and  soldiers. It
was also the target of enemy attacks since it connected most of the major cities in Manchuria.

The Japanese Army had Manchurian Railroad defense units. You can see cups from those units on these
pages:

Railroad Defense Units and Railroad Engineer Units

The cups shown here were given to those who worked for the South Manchuria Railroad--anyone from
conductors to office workers. The insignia has an M and a rail.

Although the history of this company is long, cups with this insignia are very hard to find.

The Wikipedia article has much more on this company.

Very rare cup with both the Manchurian Railroad Defense insignia (above) and the South
Manchuria Railway (1906-1945) emblem (below). The latter is especially hard to find on any
kind of sake cup.
Inscribed 'South Manchuria Railway Independent Defense Unit Commemorative.'
Hand-painted. Made at the Kutani kiln.
