Unlike most other cups with this flag given to troops stationed in Manchuria,
these were made for civilians who were trained to develop the country. Many
people (usually poor young people) were trained in agriculture and other
practical skills and then shipped off to Manchuria to be productive

The bottle has embossed figures on two sides (flags, a shrine gate, and what
appears to be a Chinese building) and the original cardboard presentation box.
These boxes for bottles are quite rare.

Both the cup and the bottle are dated, which is uncommon. They both have the
same inscription, but since they have separate boxes and the porcelain is
different (white cup and a yellow bottle), they may not be a set. They probably
came from the same shop, though.

Inscribed on both: 'Showa 15 [1940] Building Manchuria, Labor Volunteer Unit,
Akita Unit'. Akita is a prefecture in Japan.
