Holy War Commemorative
When one hears the words 'Holy War', one naturally thinks
of war wrapped up in religious doctrine, such as the
Christian Crusades of the Middle Ages in Europe or
modern-day Islamic wars, almost always concerned with
religion. In wartime Japan (stretching back to the Meiji era),
state-sponsored Shinto was the national religion with the
Emperor as the head. I am not sure when this phrase first
started to be used in Japan, but I am guessing it was in the
1930s.
This phrase is somewhat distasteful to many Japanese
today, and perhaps was not so popular in the 1930s, either.
Very few cups or bottles appear with this phrase.
The relevant kanji are to the right. I do not have so many
cup examples now, but hope to post a few more when they
pop up.
