FLAGS ON  CUPS
One of the most common images on military sake cups is a flag.
Along with the two Japanese flags, many other appear as well.
Here is a quick ID guide for various flags. If you have any others,
please allow me to put on picture on this site!

Once in a while you can find an American
flag on cups. These usually date from the
1910s and 1920s, when relations were not
so frosty. This cup is interesting because it
not only has an American flag, it is also a
named warship cup. The ship is the Izumo,
which probably made a stop in an American
port. The kanji says 'DISPATCH TO
AMERICA.'
3rd Battalion flag
This cup is from late 1940 and commemorates
Sino-Japanese cooperation in the form of the
reconstructed Nationalist Gov't at Nanking
under Dr. Wang. It is the successor to the cups
with the Japanese flag and the five-striped
Chinese republic flag.
Thanks for the info, Mike!
