Bayonets
Very rare hand-painted bayonet cup. There is a branch of some sort, and a kanji that means 'Prize.'
A nicely detailed rim.
Inscribed on the reverse 'Infantry 7th Regiment, 2nd Division, Bayonet Skills Competition
Association' and in the base: 'Made by Shibata'.
Most bayonets on sake cups are shown attached to a rifle and
seem to be just general military symbols. They are almost
never detailed--usually depicted by a line or two extending from
the tip of the rifle.
The first cup shown here, though, is different. It is detailed,
probably because it was a prize for a bayonet contest. I'm not
sure how these were contested, but by the inscription it looks
like different divisions held competitions. Perhaps these
entailed different attack poses and maybe some sort of
bayonet attachment skills assessment.
Bayonet: juuken
Lacquered wood cup with gold gilt jukendo (bayonet practice)
equipment. Very rare to find this design on a cup.
Inscribed 'Prize' and on the reverse 'Imperial Guard Infantry,
2nd Regiment, Kawanishi'.
Lacquered wood cup with gold gilt IG insignia, and two branches: mums
and paulonia.
Inscribed 'Showa 12 [1937] Imperial Guard Infantry, 2nd Regiment, 10th
Company, Jukendo [bayonet practice] Skills Association'.
Very rare Bayonet Competition cup. The design has crossed rifles with blunted tips. Inscribed 'Bayonet Skills, Championship, Gift to Suzuki Eisuke.' On the reverse: 'Meiji 43 [1910] First Annual Bayonet Skills Match, 1st Group, 1st Prize Sake Cup, 27th Infantry, 12th [Battalion?].' The 27th Regiment belonged to the 7th Division out of Hokkaido.
