The Tripartite Pact:
Axis Commemorative Items
The items here are all rare and not exactly well-received on some auction
venues. Of course, I show them here for an historical record.

When the Tripartite Pact was signed, not much was made of it in Japan. The
Japanese public was probably ambivalent, so there was no explosion of
commemorative items. There were a few, though, and I have found some
examples. I have not restricted this page to cups.

Items with all three flags are the focus here, but I have included a Nazi
Germany / Japan handball tournament belt buckle. Too interesting to leave off.
Tripartite Pact Commemorative--candy dish?.
Protect the Nation
Here is a teacup with all three national flags and an expression 'kokumin
seishin sodoin
', which translates into National Spiritual Mobilization. In
December 1937 the National Spiritual Mobilization Central League was set up
as an auxiliary organ of the cabinet. Its goal: to raise popular awareness of and
support for the war. One of the successful programs to indoctrinate the nation.
Plate with three national flags around the rim.
This medal looks like it's not
from Japan. Italian made?
Note the national symbols on
the sleeves.
Card advertising a Stamp Exposition
showing stamps from all three countries.
Sponsored by the Italian and German
embassies, as well as a Japanese group
with the name 'World Knowledge.'

Dated 1940.
Rare badge. Unknown use.
Postcard showing the kids having fun
with the flags.
Urushi plate. Note the national symbols in the
comma shapes.
Enameled belt buckle.
Tripartite Pact commemorative swath of cloth from Japan. It
includes an Italian warship (labeled in Japanese), a German tank
with the Nazi flag, and a Japanese fighter plane. This cloth is quite
long: It measures about 310 cm by 69 cm. I have seen other
military designs on WW2-era kimono for Japanese boys, so I
imagine that's what this is.
