| Beautiful 3-cup set. Lacquered wood with gold gilt kanji in the bowls. The gilt is thick. In addition to the kanji, there is also a cipher (shorthand signature) that is probably the artist's, though I'm not exactly sure. The three kanji read (from the left): Sea, Tathata, Mercy. Since the central kanji is a religious term (click on the link for details), I suppose this three-kanji combination means something significant. However, I do not know what it may be... Inscribed on the reverse: 'Tokyo 1st Hospital, Gift from the Empress Dowager [Emperor Hirohito's mother], Monetary Donation Commemorative, Showa 7 [1932] May 17th.' No chips or cracks.
